Montalban Trilogy Dayhike

So last 24th of December, I decided to hike alone in Montalban. There's this strong urge in my heart to do it alone, with no one to depend on but my self. (With occasional assistance from the guide though.) Hehe

I had to face the fear of commuting alone at wee hours, crossing a dark footbridge nested with pickpocketers and going back home without oversleeping in the jeep!

I left home at 3AM, took the route to Montalban. Jeepneys are usually present at the footbridge in front of Sta. Lucia Grand Mall. I arrived in San Rafael at around 4AM and headed straight to the registration area. My guide was late, so we started trekking at around 5AM.

Mt. Binacayan (424 MASL)

We reached the first Summit at 6:30AM, took some photos and headed down for breakfast before starting the trek to Mt. Pamitinan. It's highly suggested that you take Mt. Binacayan first if you'll be doing a twin or trilogy hike. This spot offers a nice sea of clouds if the weather is good. :) Plus, this for me, has the most challenging trail among the three! As I have said on my previous post about this mountain, this mountain is a little ass-kicker!

It was a lucky day because there are very few hikers. And they would usually notice me of being alone. Some people at the trail would tease me of being heart broken. I would just smile or joke them this way, "Kailangan po pag magso-solo malaki problema? Di pwedeng masaya lang?"

Can somebody enlighten me? Because I've come to this point that I cannot resist going to the mountains, with or without companion. :)

Mt. Pamitinan(426 MASL)

We reached the second summit at 11AM. It was scorching hot and the wind at the summit makes me wanna take a nap but my guide/friend said no! So mean, right? Haha
This is my second time in Mt. Pamitinan, so this is sort of a revenge climb for me because I haven't took photos on its "buwis buhay spot" during my first visit.

Mt. Hapunang Banoi (517 MASL)

The last summit for that day and the highest among the three. Its trail is composed of big boulders and sharp rocks akin to Mt. Binacayan's. It was my first time here so this was really exciting for me. And at this moment I already feel the achievement! :)

But the trail gradually becomes easier when you get nearer to the summit, as there were flat spaces which is covered with bamboo trees ; a great relief after a series of rock scrambling.

This spot was my favorite because of the huge grey-colored limestone st the background. I was a bit nervous at first because this one is very tricky! But when you let go of your fear, its liberating!

We reached the summit at 1PM, so that's like a 2-hour trek from Mt Pamitinan's summit to Hapunang Banoi's summit.

And then I met these guys at the last leg of my Trilogy, who were incredibly passionate about the outdoors as well. We had a short chat about the mountains they've hiked, their experiences which inspired me more to go further, and eventually led to planning a hike together. Which I hope we could push through next year.

Successfully finished the trilogy at 2:49 PM making 19,064 steps on my steps tracker! :D I can now say, my 2017 is fulfilled! We were already hungry and I was already asking Jeric about food. He opted to eat rice and I had cup noodles since there's no other food at the jump off. :(

To the locals at the jump off who congratulated me on accomplishing my goal that day and who were very hospitable they even offered me to try their pulutan "adobong paniki", which was very good by the way, thank you guys!

To my guide, Jeric who I no longer treat as a guide but rather, a friend who I can trust and who won't take advantage of your kindness. Thank you buddy! The beautiful pictures are all because of this guy!

My Itinerary:
0330 Take a Jeep going to Montalban
0430 Arrival in Wawa, Register and pay Environmental Fee
0500 Start trek to Mt. Binacayan
0630 Mt. Binacayan Summit
0700 Descend
0800 Breakfast at Jump off
0930 Start trek to Mt. Pamitinan
1100 Mt. Pamitinan Summit
1130 Start trek to Hapunang Banoi
1300 Mt. Hapunang Banoi Summit
1330 Descend
1459 End of Trilogy/Jump off

As for the expenses, this was not exactly what I spent since this was a friendly hike for me and Jeric, he just told me to pay for his food and don't bother for the guide fee but of course we can't be okay with that so I still gave him something.

Expenses:
Sta. Lucia vv Montalban Php34x2 = Php64
Tricycle to Wawa Php60x2 = Php120 (special trip, you can opt to wait for other passengers to cut the fare)
Registration Fee Php40
Guide Fee for Trilogy Php1500
Total: Php 1,724

This is definitely one for the books! (or blogs in this case) I did not only discover more of my self but I discovered more of the goodness in strangers. Because sometimes, it's the strangers that will give you honesty rather than the people you thought were loyal to you. 😘

See, going solo isn't so bad at all. You open your doors to new discoveries, new capabilities, new camaraderie and never ending new things life can offer.

Nagpatong Rock + Outreach Program in Sitio Tuoy

Date: December 17, 2017

It was my first time to organize an event like this. It's overwhelming at first but for the calling of sharing this Christmas season, and with the help of these kind-hearted people with me, and of course the people who donated goodies for the kids, we were able to make this event a success!

This post won't contain any itineraries or travel guide guys, sorry. Because this post is supposed to open your hearts to camaraderie and sharing to our fellow brothers and sisters. (Wait, I sound so kind! Charot!) :P

If you follow Dainty Freckles on facebook you might saw our event, "Project Pangitiin ang mga Batang Dumagat"which I hosted with my fellow climber friends. We had a target of supplying 60 hygiene kits to the kids of Sitio Tuoy plus toys and to feed them on the said day.

So I contacted friends who also climb and explained to them our project, and luckily, we were able to create a group who will deliver the gifts to Sitio Tuoy. There were also friends who donated goodies for the kids and even cash donations and we were so grateful for them.

Even managed to also buy simple noche buena package for our guides.

Since it was a non-profit event, the hike to Nagpatong Rock is a DIY(Do-It-Yourself) Climb. We pitched in for everything; our service jeepney, food, and guide fees.

The hike started at around 7AM, because this guy right here was LATE! hahaha! But he still showed up and for that, we are grateful!

Traffic! Sardinas us while waiting for others to come down of the rock formation.
14 brave hearts! Kudos guys!
Despite of the rain, muddy trail and strong wind, we finished the hike complete and intact! We then headed down to have our lunch, as Sitio Tuoy is quite far from Nagpatong Rock. It's nearer in Mt. Paliparan but the group excites Nagpatong Rock so, majority wins! :)

We started our route to Sitio Tuoy at 1:30 PM. It was drizzling and the trail was slippery but I didn't see any sign of relinquish on any of my friends' faces. Everyone is very committed to our goal that day!

After the two-hour walk, we finally reached the community. We had to prepare immediately to cook the soup we were gonna feed to the kids, and the loots that we were going to give to them so we barely had time to rest.

Kudos to this girl for being extra hands on! She hosted the games as well! Love you!
This girl as well for helping me with everything; from planning to shopping in Divisoria to budgeting the sopas! Hahaha!

Thank you everyone, and looking forward to making more outreach programs with you guys!

To the Dumagat tribe who welcomed us warmly and to those lend us their cooking set, thank you so much! 💕

To the kids whom we made happy that day, keep shining, keep dreaming little ones!

How to Get There:

  • Ride a Lemery-bound Jam Liner bus in Buendia or Cubao

Tres Marias eager to see Mt. Maculot's beauty!
Tall cogon grasses present near the campsite
Maculot's first part of the trail is quite hard to the point that I questioned myself, "Is this really a 3/9?" The assault at the first part reminds me of Mt. Daraitan's trail.

There are several trails that require rope rappelling; one at the first bench where you can first peak at the Taal Lake, and second is before going up to the rockies.

Charlie's Angels wanna-be

Taal lake as seen at the Rockies of Mt. Maculot!

We opted for traverse because we're adventure-thirsty. The trails going to summit coming from rockies is foresty; its covered with more trees, grass and vines.

We reached the summit at around 11AM and took some rest before heading down to Grotto.

At the Grotto

Traverse will require a lot of endurance, strength and perseverance. It can be very slippery during rainy season and other parts are pure assault. We had to take a lot of stops, catching our breath and trying to retain our strength. Also passed another rope rappelling but this one's very complicated! It's almost a 90-degree rock wall with a very small foot path. You have to cling at one part, the you have to push yourself in order to reach the other rock.

Harder than it looks!
The best side trip after the hike? G2B Lomi House is the place to be! Just ask the driver you will be hiring to drop you off at G2B, it's located at Brgy. 5. Also, the main road where buses going back to Manila is just a walking distance for the lomi house.

Here's our sample itinerary:
